Discover Your Message

Book cover for Discover Your Message

By Jonathan Milligan

Part of my Personal branding reading theme.

I picked this up wanting a straight answer to a practical question: how do you figure out what your message should be, to build your personal brand around? What I got was a motivational speech.

My gut told me to bail after the first few pages, and I should have listened. The whole book runs on aphorisms and feel-good phrases, with a steady undertow of woo-woo — a calling waiting inside you, a role you were born to play, a purpose that lives somewhere in your chest. Every chapter opens by asking if you’re ready for the journey. After a while the question starts to feel like stalling.

To be fair to Jonathan Milligan, there is a skeleton of a good idea in here. The framework sorts your message into three parts — how you help, who you help, what you help with. I’d have happily read a short, sharp article on just that.

But it’s buried. The advice is vague where it should be specific, and repetitive where it’s already thin. You’re told to embrace your individuality and be more of yourself, which is true but also useless — nobody working to find their message is struggling because they forgot to be themselves. The book keeps handing you the hype and skipping the how.

That’s the pattern throughout: heavy on inspiration, light on anything you could do tomorrow morning. It reads like it wants to make you feel capable rather than make you capable. Those aren’t the same thing, and self-help books that confuse them tend to leave you exactly where you started, just briefly warmer about it.

Milligan seems well-intentioned, and I don’t doubt he’s helped people. Some readers want the pep talk, and if that’s you, you might get something out of the energy here. But if you came for a method — a way to actually sit down and pin your message to the page — you’ll spend most of the book waiting in vain.

I don’t regret finishing it, because it sharpened what I want from this kind of book: fewer promises about the journey, more of the map. This one lacks the latter.

“How come there is no personality test to help influencers discover if they are more of a writer, speaker, teacher, or coach? That was the day I created the first version of the Influencer Voice Assessment.

Understanding your “one word” is essential, as it represents the core of your strengths and can serve as a guiding force in your life.

To complete this exercise, you’ll need the help of other people. A friend once told me, “It’s hard to read the label when you’re inside the bottle.” To discover what your superpower is, you’ll need an outside perspective.

My wife took a cool rock we found while hiking the Appalachian Trail and decoupaged the word “resourceful” on the rock.

Embracing your unique superpower by identifying your one word is a game-changer in how you show up for others and create a lasting impact.

Your purpose is not a thing, it’s something inside of you, and that’s what makes it awesome.
